La mauvaise nouvelle est tombée hier soir : la NHL ne prendra part aux prochains Jeux olympiques 2018 de Pyeongchang.
1998 : l’enthousiasme s’empare du tournoi olympique de hockey qui voit pour la première fois les stars de la NHL participer à l’événement, les Bure, Jagr, Forsberg, Hasek et Gretzky. Vingt ans plus tard, le son de cloche n’est plus le même.
Comme nous pouvions le redouter (cf article précédent), le couperet est tombé. Depuis Nagano 1998, le circuit phare libérait donc systématiquement ses joueurs en février pour le tournoi olympique. Mais plusieurs points avaient rendu stériles les négociations pour l’édition 2018 : le décalage horaire désavantageux pour les audiences nord-américaines, les frais d’assurance, de transport et d’hébergement, sans compter que les propriétaires des franchises NHL ont toujours été réfractaires à l’idée de geler les activités pour quinze jours d’olympiade.
Mais les Jeux olympiques, la NHL en a-t-elle encore envie ? Gary Bettman et ses acolytes n’ont fait aucun effort dans les négociations, ils étaient davantage préoccupés par la création de leur tournoi alternatif (la Coupe du monde) et leur refus de participer aux JO a été communiqué peu de temps après que la fédération internationale ne règle certains points décisifs, les frais d’assurance et de transport, un comble dénoncé par le Comité International Olympique.
L’Association des joueurs (NHLPA) et certains joueurs eux-mêmes, sans compter les fans, regrettent déjà cette décision qui constitue clairement un pas en arrière pour la discipline. La NHL a dit non, mais pourra-t-elle vraiment interdire ses joueurs d’aller en Corée du Sud ? Ted Leonsis, propriétaire des Capitals de Washington, avait d’ores et déjà prévenu : il n’empêchera aucun de ses meilleurs internationaux de renforcer son pays aux Jeux, dont le très catégorique Alexander Ovechkin. Le tollé général de cette décision sera-t-il suivi d’un bras de fer ?
